This is an exhibition poster from 1929. The designer was William Addison Dwiggins. I like the spacing of the letters and the consistent size used throughout, which makes the type become a horizontal element in the overall design.
This example is a record album cover from 1946. The designer was Alex Steinweiss. I like the placement of the type in the overall design and the use of color.

GDA 110 Project 1 Font Poster
Century
Century Schoolbook
The Century font originated as the foundry type, Century Roman, designed by Linn Boyd Benton for American Type founders in 1894. His son, Morris Fuller Benton, later redesigned the Century Roman font and by 1912 the American Type Founders catalog featured 65 pages of samples of various Century fonts. Morris Fuller Benton ultimately created a series of Century fonts that were released over a ten year period and therefore has been credited with inventing the concept of a "type family".
Century Schoolbook was created by Morris Fuller Benton in 1919 for the textbook publisher Ginn & Co. as an easy-to-read typeface for textbooks. It is based on the original Century Roman font.
